How butterjelly works
Four steps to watching YouTube with a friend who has opinions.
1. Drop a YouTube link
Paste any YouTube URL into the input on the home screen — full watch URL, shortened (youtu.be), or embed URL all work.
2. butterjelly reads the room
Three data sources get pulled in parallel:
- Top 200 audience comments — to capture the tone, the running jokes, and which moments fans actually noticed.
- The video transcript — so the AI tracks what's literally happening on screen, not just what people said about it.
- A subject research brief — current discourse and gossip (≤ 7 days old) about the people or show in the video, pulled from a separate cached layer.
3. A persona builds for this video
Those inputs build a watching-companion persona tuned to this specific video — her opener, her 6-10 moment reactions placed across the timeline, and her chat-reply voice all adapt to what the audience is feeling.
4. Watch together
Hit play. She lands a quiet opener. As scenes unfold, she drops moment reactions in the chat. You can chat back any time — ask "who's this guy?" or "what just happened?", and she replies in character, grounded in the transcript and the comments around that timestamp.
Memory across videos
Sign up and she remembers what you watched together. The next time you paste a video, she'll callback what you've seen before, naturally.
